Well, I guess the first note to mention will be the new increased pricing by Hohner.
I've gold plated harmonicas for the past 8 years now, and all I can say about Hohner is that their workmanship has drastically decreased.
I've only known this tobe Hohner's second price increase, but hopefully with them adding a further $8.50 to a Special 20, and around $50 to a Super 64 that the quality of the metal work increases at least.
They've gone from fairly well lasting chrome/nickel plated cover plates to thin chrome plated, or just tin plate....basically their metal isn't upto awhole lot anymore.
The pressed out cover plates will certainly rot out much quicker than before.
There was a time that I would sayt that the cheapest model in the Hohner range was much better than their somewhat more expensive harps, however that has now changed and you're better off buying one of the cheapest harps on the market which sounds much better, and certainly has a better quality about it...The Kay's Chicago Blues...don't laugh, it's true !!!...Go try one and see for yourself.
We've got customers that have had these wee harps for years and they'll say that those are great little harps that they'll certainly pitch against many other harps. Click here to go get one and check it out...., and it looks sodding terrific in 24kt gold..
However, their highest priced harmonica, the "48 Chord" has always had a very shite finish, and for the money that harp costs (around $2000 now), it's bloody ridiculous.
The 24kt gold application will certainly make all of the cover plates more durable although we can only layer above Hohner's shite finish.
However, we are now taking some of the Hohner harps off our list of what can be gold plated as we won't touch some of their harps due to their quality demise.
Some of their harps are still made well although some went downhill, only to be made a lot better again.
Maybe they had enough complaints about their work ?...
You'd think with such companies such as Suzuki, that Hohner would want to keep up their 150 year quality workmanship image with all of their products.
Hohner's closest rivals, Seydel not only sell much better harps with quality metalwork, but their also cheaper in most cases.
Their cheapest model outranks any of the harps in the Hohner range now.
If you want to take a look at the Seydel range, then please CLICK HERE..
My personnal favourite in the harmonica manufacturer's is the Suzuki range.
Their quality is unbeaten.
Their customer service, and dealer service cannot be beaten.
Their workmanship is by far the best in any of the harmonica manufacturer's around at this present time.
If there is a problem with a dodgey reed, or whatever, then you can be assured that Os at Suzuki will certainly take care of it.
well, I think thats it for this time.
Hope there's been some aggreement with what has been noted in this first entry, and we look forward to adding more as time permits.
